Hello Families,

English Language Arts:

Looking for ways to practice writing at home? Check out Scholastic's great story starter website. Often students find it challenging to generate ideas for a writing topic when left open ended. This website will help provide some silly writing topics.
Story Starters

Words of the Week:
We will be continuing to practice the word list from last week as there are a couple longer trickier words on it.

Students have access to their personal dictionaries and word lists during writing activities here at school to support them when spelling many of these words. However knowing these words from memory really helps during writing so students can focus on writing their ideas and not spending as much time looking these words up. Some students can become discouraged during the writing process when they feel they need to stop and search for words frequently.
Math:
Math Thinking Routines: Guess my Number?
A great way to practice number at home is to play Guess My Number?
Using a number-line or one hundreds chart found here Interactive Hundreds Chart

  1. Either parent or child chooses a secret number (1 - 100) and writes it down on a sticky note or piece of paper and covers it.
  2. Student/parent take turns asking questions about the number
  3. Use the interactive hundreds chart to record the questions/numbers that have been asked (ex: cross out all the even numbers if the question "Is it an even number? is asked and it is in fact an odd number)
  4. Finally the number is identified - Try to solve with the least amount of questions

Purpose:
  • Place value
  • Algebraic thinking
  • Ordering numbers

Sample Questions:

  • Is the number odd or even?
  • Is the number a one-digit or a two-digit number?
  • Is the number greater than 50?
  • Is the number less that 20?
  • Does the number have ___tens or ____ ones?

Here is another online variation or the guess my number game.

Hello Families,

New Words Of The Week

We will focus on these words for two weeks

Science
-Last Week we finished our Hot and Cold Temperature Unit and tested our Hot Chocolate insulators. Please see the following for some of our photos!  We covered and explored the following outcomes from the Science curriculum. Feel free to take a few minutes to review these outcomes.

Students can:
    1. Describe temperature in relative terms, using expressions, such as hotter than, colder than.
    2. Measure temperature in degrees Celsius (°C).
    3. Describe how heating and cooling materials can often change them; e.g., melting and freezing, cooking, burning.
    4. Identify safe practices for handling hot and cold materials and for avoiding potential dangers from heat sources.
    5. Recognize that the human body temperature is relatively constant and that a change in body temperature often signals a change in health.
    6. Identify ways in which the temperature in homes and buildings can be adjusted; e.g., by turning a thermostat up or down, by opening or closing windows, by using a space heater in a cold room.
    7. Describe, in general terms, how local buildings are heated:
      • identify the energy source or fuel
      • recognize that most buildings are heated by circulating hot air or hot water
      • describe how heat is circulated through the school building and through their own homes.
    8. Describe the role of insulation in keeping things hot or cold, and identify places where some form of insulation is used; e.g., clothing, refrigerator, coolers, homes.
    9. Identify materials that insulate animals from the cold; e.g., wool, fur and feathers; and identify materials that are used by humans for the same purpose.
    10. Design and construct a device to keep something hot or cold.
    11. Describe ways in which temperature changes affect us in our daily lives.

NEW Science Unit
-Moving forward we will begin our exploration of magnets. If you have magnets at home, can you please send some in. Send them in a labeled ziplock bag if you would like them returned.

Students will:
  1. Identify where magnets are used in the environment and why they are used.
  2. Distinguish materials that are attracted by a magnet from those that are not.
  3. Recognize that magnets attract materials with iron or steel in them; and given a variety of metallic and nonmetallic objects, predict those that will be attracted by a magnet.
  4. Recognize that magnets have polarity, demonstrate that poles may either repel or attract each other, and state a rule for when poles will repel or attract each other.
  5. Design and produce a device that uses a magnet.
  6. Demonstrate that most materials are transparent to the effects of a magnet. A magnetic field will pass through such materials, whereas other materials interact with a magnet.
  7. Compare and measure the strength of magnets.
MATH
In Math we are continuing to explore addition and subtraction with numbers to 100. Students are starting to explore the idea of regrouping and making a new Ten when adding. Please spend some time ensuring your child feels comfortable with recalling the Doubles Facts. Also being able to identify which number is one more, two more, one less and two less is also a great tool in being able to add and subtract efficiently.
Here are two great videos for understanding 'One More' and 'One Less

A Note From the Office!

Good morning Auburn Bay Families,

Kindergarten Registration has now begun and we are planning on our student numbers for the fall of 2020-2021.  If you know that your child is not going to be returning to Auburn Bay School for the  2020-2021 school year, we would appreciate an email indicating where your child will be going so we can update our records.  This will help guide our planning for next year's school organization.

Please email auburnbay@cbe.ab.ca by March 6th if your child is not going to be returning in the fall.

We thank you in advance as we prepare for the new year!

Math

Break Apart Addition

Hello Families,

In Math we have been learning a variety of ways to solve addition problems. Please check out the following videos to better understand the strategy of breaking numbers apart. There are a few different variations to this method. The key understanding is that students understand the place value behind each number. How many Tens and how many Ones they are working with. By the end of Grade Two all students should be able to add and subtract using numbers up to 100.

A great way to practice is to use some dice to roll different equations and then work through each question.

Here are two different videos showing the same concept in different ways. They are decomposing (breaking apart) numbers and using the expanded form of numbers.

2 Digit Addition using Base Ten Blocks

Some students benefit from using the base ten blocks to help support their understanding of the place value of each number.
Here is a video demonstrating this concept.
