Hello Families,

English Language Arts:

Looking for ways to practice writing at home? Check out Scholastic's great story starter website. Often students find it challenging to generate ideas for a writing topic when left open ended. This website will help provide some silly writing topics.

Words of the Week:
We will be continuing to practice the word list from last week as there are a couple longer trickier words on it.

Students have access to their personal dictionaries and word lists during writing activities here at school to support them when spelling many of these words. However knowing these words from memory really helps during writing so students can focus on writing their ideas and not spending as much time looking these words up. Some students can become discouraged during the writing process when they feel they need to stop and search for words frequently.
Math:
Math Thinking Routines: Guess my Number?
A great way to practice number at home is to play Guess My Number?
Using a number-line or one hundreds chart found here Interactive Hundreds Chart

  1. Either parent or child chooses a secret number (1 - 100) and writes it down on a sticky note or piece of paper and covers it.
  2. Student/parent take turns asking questions about the number
  3. Use the interactive hundreds chart to record the questions/numbers that have been asked (ex: cross out all the even numbers if the question "Is it an even number? is asked and it is in fact an odd number)
  4. Finally the number is identified - Try to solve with the least amount of questions

Purpose:
  • Place value
  • Algebraic thinking
  • Ordering numbers

Sample Questions:

  • Is the number odd or even?
  • Is the number a one-digit or a two-digit number?
  • Is the number greater than 50?
  • Is the number less that 20?
  • Does the number have ___tens or ____ ones?

Here is another online variation or the guess my number game.
