Term One

Good Afternoon Families,
Report Cards will be available digitally in the coming days.

Language Arts:
This term in language arts we have focused on a number of the outcomes from the Alberta Program of Studies curriculum. If you are interested in seeing what the grade two expectations are, I will add a link here to the curriculum. The Language arts curriculum is a year long process in which we continually build on concepts and skills.
Grade 2 Language Arts Curriculum

In Math we have been focusing on Developing Number Sense and Patterns and Relations.
  • Number Sense
    • Say the number sequence 0 to 100 by:
      • 2s, 5s and 10s, forward and backward, using starting points that are multiples of 2, 5 and 10 respectively
      • 10s, using starting points from 1 to 9
      • 2s, starting from 1.
    • Demonstrate if a number (up to 100) is even or odd.
    • Describe order or relative position, using ordinal numbers (up to tenth).
    • Compare and order numbers up to 100.
    • demonstrate and explain the effect of adding zero to, or subtracting zero from, any number.
    • Apply mental mathematics strategies for basic addition facts and related subtraction facts to 18.
      • using doubles
      • making 10
      • one more, one less
  • Patterns
    • Demonstrate an understanding of repeating patterns (three to five elements) by:
      • describing
      • extending
      • comparing
      • creating
        • patterns using manipulatives, diagrams, sounds and actions.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of increasing patterns by:
      • describing
      • reproducing
      • extending
      • creating
        • numerical (numbers to 100) and non-numerical patterns using manipulatives, diagrams, sounds and actions.
    • Sort a set of objects, using two attributes, and explain the sorting rule.

Math Curriculum

In Science we have been exploring liquids.

Topic A: Exploring Liquids
Students learn about the nature of liquids and the interactions of liquids with other materials. They explore liquids by examining droplets, by watching liquids trickle down slopes, by investigating flow rates and by observing liquid interactions with a variety of materials. They learn that some materials are impervious to liquids, while others are absorbent, and that some liquids mix readily while others do not. They observe that liquid water can be changed to ice or to steam, and back again, if heated and cooled, and that wet materials dry out when left open to the air. Through this topic, students learn that water is our most important liquid, that we use water in many ways, and that water is essential to life.
  • Describe some properties of water and other liquids, and recognize the importance of water to living and nonliving things.
  • Describe the interaction of water with different materials, and apply that knowledge to practical problems of drying, liquid absorption and liquid containment.

We have also begun to explore our Hot & Cold Temperatures Unit

Social Studies:
We have begun to explore Canada's 3 dynamic communities of Nunavut, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia. Our main focus has been on Saskatchewan and the Prairies for this term.
