Break Apart Addition
Hello Families,
In Math we have been learning a variety of ways to solve addition problems. Please check out the following videos to better understand the strategy of breaking numbers apart. There are a few different variations to this method. The key understanding is that students understand the place value behind each number. How many Tens and how many Ones they are working with. By the end of Grade Two all students should be able to add and subtract using numbers up to 100.
A great way to practice is to use some dice to roll different equations and then work through each question.
Here are two different videos showing the same concept in different ways. They are decomposing (breaking apart) numbers and using the expanded form of numbers.
2 Digit Addition using Base Ten Blocks
Some students benefit from using the base ten blocks to help support their understanding of the place value of each number.
Here is a video demonstrating this concept.
