Home Reading for 5 - 10 minutes every night!

Math:

Please practice counting by 2s, 5s, 10s forwards and backwards. You can use a one hundreds chart to help. We started exploring movement patterns today. Students made up their own movement and sound patterns with up to 3 elements (AB) (ABC). Ask them to show you. You can challenge them to make a movement pattern with up to 5 elements. We learned that patterns have to repeat a minimum of 3 times to be considered a pattern. 

Language Arts:

We learned about 'Read to Someone' today. Students Practiced sitting EEKK and using a quiet voice to read to their partner. Reading out-loud helps us build fluency and to not read like a robot.  During Free Writing we learned about how to use The Five Senses to write with more detail. If you would like to practice some writing at home, you can ask your child to use some of the following sentence starters to describe their day. 

Terry Fox Run

Toonies for Terry 

Auburn Bay School will be participating in the Terry Fox Run on Wednesday, September 25th. As we lead up to our run, classes will be working towards increasing their stamina in Phys. Ed while fundraising money for cancer research. Please bring in Toonies for Terry to your classroom teacher as we spread cancer awareness.

On the day of the run, it is important that students wear appropriate outside shoes for walking/running along with dressing appropriately for the weather that day. Parents are welcome to join us for this event out on the soccer field at 1:45 PM on Wednesday, September 25th. The Terry Fox Run will last approximately 15 minutes and students will line up with their homeroom teacher to go back inside for the remainder of the afternoon when we have finished. We kindly ask parents to wait outside while this is happening and to pick up your child from their normal dismissal spot.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Hello Families,

Just a reminder tomorrow is a half day and no school on Friday. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at parent teacher conferences tomorrow evening 4:00pm - 7:00pm and Friday morning 8:00am - 12:00pm. If you need to change your appointment time please let me know.

Thank you to those of you who have signed up for parent teacher interviews. There are still a few spots available. Please log into your My CBE/PowerSchool account to choose a time. Due to parent teacher conferences students will have early dismissal on Thursday and no school on Friday. 

Book orders came home today! Please check them out with your child. They are due on Sept 27th, 2019. Please order online. 

In Art we have been working on our self portraits using mixed media and using face proportions to help with the layout of our features. This was a tricky tasks and required some perseverance! The students did a great job! Their personal word will be on display with their portrait for parent teacher conferences. 

In Math we have been reviewing the one hundreds chart. We practiced counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. In grade two the curriculum expectations for a portion of the number section is for students to be able to:

Say the number sequence 0 to 100 by:

• 2s, 5s and 10s, forward and backward, using starting points that are multiples of 2, 5 and 10 respectively
• 10s, using starting points from 1 to 9
• 2s, starting from 1.

And to:

• Demonstrate if a number (up to 100) is even or odd.

In Social Studies we explored our community of Auburn Bay and what businesses and unique features we have here. 

In Language Arts we have continued to build our reading stamina during Read to Self. The students were very excited to use our stuffed animal reading buddies today. We will be learning a number of different reading strategies to help decode new words over the next few weeks.

Hello Families,

What a busy week! The students are really settling quickly into our classroom routines. 

MATH:
We practiced building a number line while playing a number line card game with a partner. Students raced one another to see who could build their number line the fastest! We also did a mind map of what the word Math means to us and all the feelings and thoughts that come with it.

LANGUAGE ARTS:
We have started to practice our letter shapes and sizes during printing practice. We are reviewing our vowel and consonant sounds as we go. Please take a moment or two at home to practice some printing to ensure students are printing clearly and using their uppercase and lowercase letters in the correct spots. We use Sky, Grass, Dirt as our guide to ensuring our letters are the correct shape and size. If you would like some extra printing practice, I do have a document I can send along that can be printed at home. Please email me to request the PDF.

SOCIAL STUDIES:

We have started to talk about the 3 dynamic communities we will be studying this year. Iqaluit, Meteghan and Saskatoon. We have started off by looking at our own families and will be looking at our community of Auburn Bay next. We are creating a flip book in our visual journals. 

HOUSE KEEPING:

• School Council Meeting tomorrow night September 12, 2019

• Parent Teacher Interview are on Thursday the 19th (Half day for students) and Friday the 20th (no school for students) this month. Please go online to book a 15 minute time slot. You will be able to book starting this Sunday at 6 am. If you are having trouble booking please email me or the office.

• Picture day is on Thursday, September 26th, 2019

• Terry Fox Run Wednesday September 25th, 2019

• Please send in a pair of headphone to use with our listening station and our laptops (inexpensive ones are great)

Welcome!

Welcome to our grade two blog! It has been a great week here in room 134. The students have started to settle in and are picking up on our routines. Our blog will be updated at least once a week to share important information and our class learning. I will often post 'house keeping' items when important dates or items come up. As always, email me if you have any questions or comments. 

House Keeping:

• Please send in a pair of over the head headphone for use with our computers and listening center (dollar store version is great)
• Please place them in a large labeled ziplock bag

• Would any parent volunteers like to be in charge of stapling and organizing our book orders? Please email me if you would like this monthly job. 

Bring Your Own Device To School
We invite students to bring their own personal devices (laptops and/or tablets) to school to support their learning at Auburn Bay. I will provide ample time prior to requiring personal technology for classroom projects. We have access to a large amount of tec at school, which is often the route I choose to use. On occasion, if possible students will be able to bring in their own tec. 

Shoes
All students need a pair of inside shoes, which are to stay at school.  These shoes should be appropriate for games and activities in the gym. This year students will also be involved in games and activities during a daily fresh air break (FAB) outside, weather permitting.  Please take this into consideration when choosing outdoor footwear for your child.

Nutrition Break / Lunch
​Please pack a healthy snack (fruit, vegetables, cheese & crackers, etc.) for our morning nutrition break.  If your child stays for lunch, please help your child understand which food is for lunch and which is for snack. We encourage you to use reusable drink and food containers as we strive to teach our students respect for our environment.

Labelling
​To ensure that your child’s personal items are easily identified please clearly label belongings such as lunch bags, water bottles, hoodies, etc.

Supplies
Please leave personal pencils, markers, erasers, coloured pencils, pencil cases, and other personal supplies items at home. The school will supply all required books and supplies. As exiting as it is to have our own person supplies this often results in items being lost or unintentionally borrowed. 

CBE Homework Policy

Homework at Auburn Bay School  (Grade 2)

Homework in the Calgary Board of Education is regulated by Administrative Regulation 3066 – Homework.   

In grade 2 it is recommended that families set aside 5-10 minutes each evening for home study.  Homework may consist of:

• Reading - this could be a combination of independent reading, a classroom home reading program or a family reading time 
• Word Work - weekly word list, or printing practice
• Math - parents will be informed about particular concepts that are being taught in class and will be given ideas of how to practice and support at home

Homework may be given as a hard copy or posted on the class blog.  Students should be doing no more than ten minutes total of homework practice each night.
